Reviews!

This is one of my favorite places to go. We have eaten there quite a few times over the last year - and have NEVER been disappointed! Great food! Menu changes with the seasons. Same owners as Alchemy - but menu is different. I don't eat sushi - but the sushi bar looks nice. Great atmosphere. Many, many good wait people - but we love John! We never hesitate to go there when we get the chance!

July 2011...Had a wonderful dinner with another couple under heated umbrella on the deck. Pricey but very good. Waitstaff was attentive, bright and engaging. We will go back in July 2012 and will try to hit Wed night all you can eat sushi if still happening. The vibe is good and I hope they make it.

Bring back Captain Courageous or Mc T's. Maybe they were not gourmet, but they didn't try to be.

in response to wendy, i have been reading these reviews and see a lot of i ate this and i got sick, well, you have no idea what you do to a restaurant when you post something of this nature and just for the record, you can get sick from something you ate 2 weeks ago, and not react until now, so try to be a little more compasionate to us restaurant owners as we try very hard to please the public. l

When this restaurant first opened, it was great: wonderful, pleasant and courteous servers (hard to find on Cape Ann sometimes, sorry but it is true!) at least in the dining room (the tavern area is another thing... terrible service, long wait, even when empty!); great food; nice ambiance. But, the food is inconsistent - sometimes great, sometimes terrible. I had a tuna club for lunch recently, and was sick all night! Other people with me that day had salads that looked okay, nothing special, and one of the other ladies also didn't feel well that night. The waitstaff was very nice and the location is great. It is unfortunate that the quality is decreasing as time passes.

We come to Gloucester almost every year, and have been to Lat 43 a few times. This year was our best experience, good, but not exceptional. Lat 43 still has some work to do in terms of service, presentation and taste on the appetizers, and the same for some of the entrees. Like the previous reviewer indicated, it also took our waiter for ever to arrive at our table, however once he did the rest of the service throughout the meal was good, albeit it might have been because of having a trainee side kick to help him out.

The appetizers are a bit pricey for what you get. We got a plate of the stuffed mushrooms for $11. I'm by no means a picky eater, but I could not deal with the shriveled up tiny 5 peices that arrived. Definitely not worth the price and the way they looked and tasted was simply awful.

Next came the entrees, I ordered the seafood paella which was a huge plate of food and it was truly excellent, but there was so much of it that I couldn't finish it. My fiancee on the other hand ordered the halubit which was very small for the price. I guess it worked out ok between the two meals as he finished my paella.

For dessert I ordered a coffee with Bailey's. When the check came they charged $7 for a shot of Baileys which is pretty steep of a price for it IMO.

Overall there weren't a lot of things to complain about but there could be improvements. One good thing is that there was a head waiter or manager who walked around and seemed like he was on top of things to ensure the service was up to par which was welcoming and showed that Lat is trying to make things better.

Finally was able to get to lat last week with my husband and another couple. Even thou i have heard mixed reviews i kept my expectations high...to be quickly dashed. For starters it took the waitress forever to come and get our drink order then even longer to take our food order .... I ordered the fresh catch of the day which was Halibut which was fishy, dry and obviously frozen ... and i know i am in the seafood industry.. the proscuitto that accompanied the halibut was like tree bark unable to eat it. My husband had prime rib although the beef was good the grissle was like plentiful. Brother in-law had steak tip sub but oddly enough the sub roll never arrived with it ????.. Sister in-law had salad which was ok... we decided to for-go dessert and run.... so dissapointed after being opened well over a year you would think they would have it together p.s. the bread-runner brought bread -with our meal... will not be returning!!!!!

My boyfriend and I had a mixed dinner here. His Chicken Marsala was wonderful. Our appetizer of Chicken Quesadillas was good and plentiful. But my appetizer of the scallops (the special of the day) had to be returned twice! Shells! They comped dessert for us and were very apologetic, but I would rather not go back again.

Crunchy things? Shepard's pie, the first meal I had there, had BONES in it. Had to speak to the manager. So . . . you be the judge.
There are better places to eat in Glosta.

My first question is, is french onion soup supposed to have hard things in it? No, I don't mean well done bread, but legitimately 'I can't get my teeth through this' hard. The small portion was a cup full of mystery substances and a hint of windex. That was what I started with. Next was a ceasar salad, which you think you couldn't go wrong with. However, had I seen the price beforehand, I would not have ordered it. Anyone who thinks they can charge $12 dollars for a bag of lettuce is out of their mind (that is the price without any kind of chicken, shrimp, or steak tips). I decided to add the shrimp to it, which tasted like they were dragged through charcoal and thrown on a plate. As for my friend's meal, she ordered the steak tips. I think chewing on a leather jacket would be better than the meat served on that plate. and the squash that came with it, a dried pile of diareah. Yes, the interior design is impressive, but the food and service is the exact opposite. NEVER will I go there again. ZERO stars. thank you.

I was in on Saturday night in the pub and ordered a Cosmopolitan at the bar and it was the worst drink I have ever had. I would have asked for another, but it took 15 minutes for the first one and she never came back. She needs to learn how to make a good drink and pay attention to her customers!

Well it didn't take long for the food to go downhill here! We used to love to go to the pub at least once a week and get an appetizer and sandwich to split. We always had our usual. Now after three chances thinking each one may have just been an "off" night we have given up. No longer worth the money or the wait!

I recently had dinner at this restaurant and I thought it was nothing less than wonderful. The sushi is properly priced with a wonderful selection, and the decor of the restaurant takes my breath away still, and I have dined there more than five times.

We are Locals who dine out "locally" at least four times a week.  We have given Lattitude43 SIX of our dining trips since it's original opening.  The first was within the first week of its opening. The meal was exceptional, but it was obvious Lat43 needed to work out some bugs with respect to coordination and service.  The second time the food was consistently good, (but not consistent with the same dish ordered for our 1st visit) -  and the service consistently lacking.  Fast Forward to today. The Sushi Pit for this dining trip.  The restaurant was not crowded. Yet the service was not there!!!  I've never been to any establishment where there is such a lack of customer service / focus by the wait staff.  I ordered my sushi dish, two items, and the chef never looked at my husband to take his order.  I gave a clue.. VERY CLEAR.. "that was my order, my husband will want to place his own order" ... NO eye connection to my husband, and not once did they ask what he wanted. My sushi dish arrived, and my husband was so angry he said Please Don't Ever Ask Me to Come Here Again.  My meal was $47!  (that included his 1 alcoholic drink) Imagine, an establishment not interested in doubling the income.. (??) AND in this economy to boot. Despite the good food, and Lat43 decor, if the customer service is not there, from hostess to wait staff, it won't reap the benefits of our return visits. Nor we will suggest Lat43 to our out of state visitors. It starts at the top with management.  Management needs to put some focus in the training the staff. My hard earned dollars will go to other great local restaurants like Duckworths, the Franklin or Passports. Extremely disappointed with Lattitude43, which had all the makings to be exceptional. FIX THE STAFF/SERVICE/FRIENDLINESS because the the decor and the chef's meals are not the only thing that counts.

Absolutely excellent! I have been hearing great reviews from friends who live in the area and my friends and I finally found time to try it out. We went on a saturday night, and after a fairly reasonable wait time were seated at a beautiful large table near to the window. The service was prompt, there was water and delicious rolls being delivered the whole time. Our server was friendly and did not need to write down our orders even though there were five of us! I personally ordered the salad with blackened chicken on top first and then a mediteranean haddock plate that had great flavor. I'm not positive exactly what all my friends ordered but a did have a taste of the salmon in a hollandaise sauce that was great. When it came time for dessert we split a pecan pie and a "messy" ice cream in a martini glass. Both were great and the perfect size. While everything was truly excellent, i particularly enjoyed being able to WATCH the cooks as they worked! They all seemed to be laughing, enjoying themselves, and as an interested audience I found their art thrilling. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the Gloucester area as long as they have the time to enjoy the full experience.

Big Thanks To Latitude 43!!

Truly savored a romantic night out with my husband at Latitude last weekend. The restaurant is cool and hip and usually hopping on the weekends so we were feeling pretty happy about getting a table without waiting. -Turned out our table was overlooking the harbor with the moon just coming up. Wow! We love the menu and the specials always sound terrific, so we just had to try everything. (With the right wine of course!)
As always the food was delicious, that's why we love going there. What prompted me to write was the way our server made us feel welcome and not rushed while we enjoyed our four-course meal and a kid-free evening. It was busy, and other tables were coming and going. At one late point after dessert and before ordering just one more glass of wine my husband asked our waitress if she'd like us to move to the bar to free up her table and she said, "This is your night out and you should spend it where you want to." I told her I couldn't have come up with a better answer myself and we left her a big tip!!
We'll keep coming!

the new head chef, zach i think is really showing his years of work here. My hat is off to the older fellow that can still run a tight ship. Great food.

Wing/Wayne...- whatever.
Thanks for the finger-wagging, Principle Andrew; but a tete-a-tete between me and another reviewer has no bearing on the validity of my review. Agree or disagree...but it was truthful and as valid as any other in here.

Posted by: gangofone at August 26, 2008 05:58 PM

Thought that the ambiance was as wonderful as the service and the food itself! As for the last few reviews written, it seems that there is a personal argument going on between gang of 1 and g- stack, and that their opinions should NOT be taken seriously, but that is quite apparent to anyone that wasted the few minutes to read the "reviews". I have been to latitude 43 several times and look forward to my next experience. Jeff Cala has done it again!! Congrats

If it were;t for the location, this place would be a zero. Our table had 3 seperate orders screwed up. Horrible food and the manager seemed like I was bothering him when I voiced my concersn on the way out. Stay away. there are many more spots worth this price tag that are much better!

Posted by: Gary Beumee at August 7, 2008 02:27 PM

well, notwithstanding g stacka(crap)'s ill-mannered bullshit - he obviously has a built-in boner against the place; I have to update my remarks.

Stacka only went recently, and as far as the sushi pit now goes - I cannot disagree. Wayne, the original sushi chef has left...and taken his good guys with him. I went on Friday and was sorely let down - the fish was marginal in quality (1/2 of a great sushi chef's value is how he BUYS the fish), and the portions have significantly been reduced. when you charge $18 for toro - the fish better be damn good (it wasn't) and the pieces should be bigger than a 1/2-mouthful each.
The Rainbow roll...which used to be amazing tasted like the crab filling was off...and the 'on the house' spider roll tasted like it had spent a couple of hours UNDER the house.

And G stacka? - up yours; if you're about 'showing off' your sushi stripes....I've out-sushi'd you over the years (20+) by a long chalk - including all the places you've been to AND Japan...spending enough real time in two of those to find and know the REALLY good places. Finding correct sushi service on the east coast is an exception, not the rule...the service at most of them is via the waitress, not the chef. Oishii (the Chestnut Hill one) is the best in/near the city - most of the others are expensive more than good.

I wish stacka'd been to Lat during the first few months when Wayne was still there running the sushi pit...it might have tempered his little aggressive fit somewhat. Probably wouldn't have stopped him being a pig, though...(my girl is cute as hell too...what gives? the waitress was smoking...kind of distracting when i'm with my girl but, hey) - Nice.

Posted by: gang of one at July 28, 2008 08:54 AM

Took my girl thier was not impressed, the food was cold service was horible. The waitress was to busy talking to her freinds very expensive. went to the pub it was ok. bartendenders are not very attentive.

Posted by: VDIMAIO at July 23, 2008 07:33 PM

and as far as gang of 1's review...

get off your high horse. there are a grip of great sushi bars in boston that blow this dump out of the water. obviously you have no clue what you're talking about. what sushi place doesn't let you order one thing at a time?! people have given this place lackluster reviews because it is not particularly good, not because we're a bunch of local yokels who haven't ventured off of cape ann. you think the best sushi around here is this place and some place in middleton...give me a break.

Posted by: g stacka at June 29, 2008 12:50 AM

went to the bar side and had a good burger. thought the layout of the place was stupid. they spent so much money on this place and yet the design is kind of underwhelming.

took my girl to the restaurant side. they gave us a horrible table even though it was late in the night and there were better ones available. my girl is cute as hell too...what gives?

the waitress was smoking...kind of distracting when i'm with my girl but, hey, i didn't let that affect my rating. actually it prolly earned them a point they didn't deserve. the waitress was hot but unattentive. ehhh, it was the end of the night...i know how that is.

what bothered me was the quality of the food and the prices. my girl got a salad that looked terrible...brown lettuce and all. i got some sushi. the fish was mediocre at best and the toro i got was NASTY. i've had better fish at much cheaper restaurants. frankly, i've had better fish at some supermarkets. when the bill came, i almost had a coronary. the sushi was WAY overpriced. i've been to all the expensive sushi spots in boston, NYC, vegas, SF and i know when the meal is worth the money. THIS WAS NOT.
too bad. i was hoping someone would start serving some good sushi on cape ann. if this place had the goods, i wouldn't complain about the price. they don't deliver. if i hear that things improve, i might go back.

Posted by: g stacka at June 29, 2008 12:44 AM

The place is over rated!!! Way to high priced and in the sushi pit very unsanitary to have to take your shoes off where food servers are walking and patrons, as well as where food is being served. Someone should call the board of health on them. The food is not good at all and I don't know who trains there staff but they were very rude. This restaurant won't make it another year if they keep there prices the same I mean they are across from Mithces for god sakes. They are not on Newbury Street in Boston!!!! I give them 0 stars!

Posted by: Janine at June 20, 2008 12:52 AM

Bar food is very poor quality, Dont recommend quesadillas. Resturant side is noce with good food. Cafeteria style tables- otherwise decor is nice.. Why the cheap and uncomfortable tables??

Jeff Cala nails it again. Best waterfront in Gloucester, can't wait for ritas on the deck.

this place looks nice but that about it. i ordered the swordfish and it was small, over cooked and they drowned it in salt. I thought about it later after i was vomiting that they put so much salt on it because it was a bad piece of fish. How is this place still in business?

gave it a second try. this time worse than before the food arrived cold service poor. prices out of this world. how long can they stay in business.

The 2 of us went Wed (3-19-08) for the first time. I was very impressed with the exterior, the interior ambiance, the service and the food. It felt urban but warm and inviting. Prices are on the high side, but I left with a very pleasant experience. We'll go back.

Posted by: Glenn at March 21, 2008 01:03 PM

I have only eaten at the sushi bar. The previous comment that it was 'seriously over-priced' is seriously inaccurate...unless you are comparing prices to take-away places or supermarkets. It's not cheap, but this ain't fish'n'chips here.
It is the only place on the East Coast I have been to that understands how you are SUPPOSED to eat sushi - you order it one item at a time directly from the sushi chef - thus it is as fresh as it could be, and you get to have a degree of rapport with the sushi chef. The serving sizes of the regular maki sushi pieces are good...many other places skimp on the fish slices. I can't talk about the regular rolls' size as I only get hand-rolls (which are great) - but you should be able to eat each piece of anything in one bit only. I really like this place - the only other one on the North Shore that comes close is Blue Fin in Middleton...but only close/no cigar.
I was lucky enough to eat a LOT of sushi regularly in the '90s in LA at the best places (which doesn't mean the most expensive, well-known or fanciest) - and I would eat it every other day if I could afford it now. Which I can't!

The 'shoe' thing, I don't get...it's certainly not a Japanese thing (that's only for the private tatami rooms, NOT at sushi bars), but it doesn't really bother me. Wear socks and you have nothing to worry about. The cold sake menu is expensive and I'm not impressed so far. Regular warm sake (Geikkekan or whatever) is just fine - and cheaper. SO - if you want to get into it properly - this IS the place; build a relationship with Wayne or his #2, and you'll love it and learn. I prefer lunchtime...it's quieter all round in there.

Posted by: Gang of One at March 19, 2008 11:10 AM

wow.
i am so disappointed with lat 43. went initially for sushi, which was quite good but seriously overpriced.

returned to try the dining room....ordered salmon with a pomagranite salsa....it was fishy and old...served with mush vegetables that were boiled in water...not even oversteamed...just boiled to death.

the mashed potatoe was ok. the service was mediocre at best.

i don't think they will make it through the winter months when the tourists go away...

love the space and decor....it's better than the food in my opinion.

Posted by: libby at March 14, 2008 04:03 PM

Yes, the atmosphere is interesting and cool in an upscale way, though I do agree with previous post that it is a bit cold. Food is mediocre, sparing a lengthy review and details, they should not serve a salad with wilted greens and way past brown carrot pieces...this is a no brainer, and when the server sees said carrot pieces piled to the side of the plate...please comment or remove salad from bill.

Kristen's review was quite refreshing and honest. I read these reviews daily and am horrified to see reviews like Mr. Reynolds that are clearly staged and in his personal interest. They are not welcome on this site. They are just a form of free advertising.Thank you Kristen for shedding light on these phony ads. Keep the true reviews coming, they aid the consumer and help us make informed choices on where to spend our dining dollars.

Posted by: JoJO at March 12, 2008 11:24 AM

I went to Lat 43 for the first time during its opening week in January. There was a significant wait and my friend and I ate in the bar. I returned again in February with my boyfriend who is a sushi fanatic.

The settings in both the bar and the sushi pit are truly captivating, but the actual dining room seemed quite industrial and "cold."

The bar food was typical - my friend and I both had salads and split a calamari appetizer. Prices seemed ok, but I am not easily offended by them. As a vegetarian, however, I felt that the bar menu items were overly concentrated on beef. Service was average, though our waitress was switched prior to receiving our entrees.

The sushi pit was neat, though taking off my shoes was a little disgusting, especially since you had little choice but to walk -- at least for a few steps -- in a high traffic area for wait staff and patrons alike. Once in the sushi pit, the warm, carpeted floors were a nice touch, but again sparked sanitation questions. Regarding the food, my boyfriend adored everything. I personally found the rolls to be incredibly large. The pieces were too big to fit in my mouth in a single, neat bite and were also too complex or flimsy to eat in halves. Also, the garden roll was a waste: while the end pieces were aesthetically impressive, they were absolutely inedible. Service was attentive yet dry and being at a lower level than the staff makes conversation and drink refills difficult. Overall, it was a pleasant experience but left something to be desired for me.

Furthermore, I value this site and the options posted; however, as a frequent restaurant reviewer, strongly feel that what is written here should be original and accurate. Steve Reynolds's review was posted verbatim on Yelp.com on January 21st. Frustrating and questionable...

The pub has been a wonderful experience every time I have been in. Great food and good service. With that said, I have been to the dining room twice and have decided it is neither worth my time or money to go again. The food is okay, neither good nor awful. The service I found to be unattentive and slow. Quite frankly I refuse to pay for an atmosphere which in the dining area is loud and impersonal. Unless you love sushi (which I do not) go elsewhere for a good night out.

Payed $22 dollars for a baked haddock an scallop combo. Very surprised at the tiny portions on my plate. The food was bland, No bread on the table, no salad with my entree.
I will agree that the building is indeed beautiful,
but when going out to eat and spending good money on a meal, I would prefer to be more impressed with the food than the decor.
Gloucester has way to many restaurants with great food at decent prices. These guys need to step up their game if the want to survive!

I am not in the restaurant industry but do eat out a lot and I have a different opinion of this particular restaurant. After having been there several times with quests, it is my opinion that the restaurant has been decorated wonderfully and the views are wonderful, even the staff is great. I do however, think that the food is just OK.... no great flavors, very ordinary and sometimes lacking spice. Again, this is a personal opinion but is also the opinion of my guests.

My name is Steve Reynolds, a 31+ year veteran of the Restaurant industry (including having been a former VP of HR at Legal Sea Foods.) I agree with Brad Pearce. This restaurant is excellent! The decor is a pleasing and interesting cross between being dramatically modern with its sculptures and classically nautical with its beautiful murals and the bottom of an antique Gloucester vessel over the open display kitchen, and the tavern/pub aptly named in honor of the original, landmark restaurant on the site, "Captain's Courageous."

I ate there with family in the tavern on it's first day, a soft (no advertising or fanfare) day and everything from the fried oysters appetizer to the martinis, and baked haddock entrees and grilled chicken Caesar salad, were are top notch! I've had the most delectable Sushi ever in the Boston area from this restaurant that was ordered as "take out" to have as an appetizer for a dinner party I was having at home. All of my guests were absolutely awed by the quality and freshness of the superb sushi. This highly talented Sushi Chef even makes his own pickled ginger.. (none of that pinkish-toned stuff out of a jar!)

I would like to point out that my experience with the restaurants owned and operated by this group over the past few years, has been one of consistent excellence. In my professional and personal opinion, Lat 43 will be Gloucester's greatest "landmark" restaurant in the City's long history of wonderful eateries!
