Reviews!

I know Julie, and that is not her! She is always pleasant and professional and has been waitressing in Gloucester for many many years. If you only "believe" your waitresses name was Julie, you should check your facts before you name someone.

I have always enjoyed passports, but I will not go back and dine there. The food was great, but my waitress was rude and has no personality. I beleive her name is Julie. She gives people a dirty look when you come inside, she was not pleasant as she was taking our order, and also rude to her co-workers. I have had her wait on us twice now.
There is a lot of nice restaurants in Gloucester with great food, and great service.

Rate staff often rude. Not worth the usually good food.

We have had nothing but good meals here. The food is great, the waitstaff is always friendly, happy, and professional. Recommended without reserve. You will have a wonderful dining experience, lunch or dinner.

I have eaten at Passports now about five times . . .
so time for a review. Love the food-- it is consistently good. Though they are creative, it also serves as comfort food, and everyone loves the popovers. Consistent and good, somewhat like the Rudder, but a more creative, innovative menu. Excellent, attentive waitstaff.

Only (small) complaint: the house wine is not so good. Otherwise, a delicious Gloucester dining experience.

Food is consistently good, more than ample portions, and while I don't care so much for the crowded tables, the service is good. A bit pricey for the lunch crowd, but overall I like it.

One of the few places on Cape Ann we never hesitate to dine at.They are so consistent in quality, flavors and service.Food you can always count on.And yes we like the popovers like everybody else does.

We love this restaurant. The popovers are awesome and the food was excellent. I had a Fried Goat Cheese salad with grilled chicken. It was the best salad I have ever had!
Also, the staff is extremely helpful and pleasant. I am looking foward to going back again.

passports is great.

for gloucester, its a five star place. i agree that the food can be a little inconsistent, but it has generally been very good. the prices are good for the quality of ingredients. the service has always been pretty good and the popovers are great.

imho, its prolly the second best restaurant in gloucester after the franklin.

i've been eating at passports for years, and they've had their ups and downs. mostly ups, though.
i need to say that the tall dark haired guy who used to waiter and cook needs some support from eric and the more experienced chefs (the woman, don't know if she's still there, is fabulous). everytime i have a lousy meal i spot him in the kitchen.
when eric, the other dark haired guy (shorter) or the woman are cooking...it's super good...and the service is always excellent, in my opinion.

Just ate at Passports for the first time. A very pleasant surprise. It was just after 4 on a Sunday afternoon. We each chose their tilapia special, with choise of soup or salad. The fish, noodles under it, veggies mixed in, and a ginger-sesame sauce all came together brilliantly! The place has a light, airy, sort of European feeling.
We'll definitely go back.

I thought the beet salad was fabulous. The shrimp and lobster that I ordered was overcooked but still tasted OK. Too many breadcrumbs sprinkled on the seafood, though. The lobster was VERY small. The bread that came with the meal was fabulous. The wait staff was great. I am from Seattle and this restaurant really gave me the feel of Cape Ann. You need to work on the cooking times for this lobster/shrimp dish.

Some people don't mind spending big bucks being well fed cattle with numbers on their ears. Others, from a more cultured background expect an occasional hello, thank you, or acknowledgement from the ownership, when you are dropping hundreds.

Food is good...

I have to say passports has gone down hill, My fiancee and I used to be regulars however over the past 6 to 8 months we have been unable to get any food delivered to our table that was cooked coreectly or just terrible, we normally order the filet mingon, which was once exceptional, however they have obviously changed cooks as now the food is just not the same, the waitstaff is still the same, but I must say I no longer go there once every two weeks, now it is once every three months to see if they change cooks.

My wife and I live in Rockport and work in Gloucester. This is one of the restaurants we recommend to friends and people who ask for recommendations where we work. The menu is diverse and the food is very good. The servers are good but not excellent. However, most places we go in the area the servers are average.

Four of us shared a delightful lunch at Passports today, seated in one of the restaurant's sunny window alcoves overlooking the everchanging sidewalk scene. Great service from a friendly, helpful waitress. Adriatic Fish Stew (served without mussels per my spouse's request) and Sisters Haddock were wonderful. Popovers to die for!

Went for lunch recently and the food was good, staff bordering on rude...my companion contemplated two choices in front of the wait person as if to ask which dish was better or if she had any suggestions and she snapped...how do I know what you want to eat. OK, waitperson here's a tip, you are not too good for your job.

The early bird specials are lovely, but an older male waiter bordered on rude. When asked what the soup special was, he snapped "It's on the menu!", and replied to another question about a salad exactly the same way. In the time it took him to say "It's on the menu", he could have answered the question courteously.
He never smiled, and was very brusque when asked for additional drinks. We felt hurried, intimidated, and not entirely welcome, spoiling what otherwise would have been anexcellent mean--esp. "Sister's Haddock" and popovers.

we have been going to passports for years, and it is our favorite restaurant in gloucester. we know we will always get a great meal there. the waitstaff is kind and curteous and we are always warmly welcomed. being a fishing captain the seafood dishes are always fresh. the popovers are the best.

The food is great. The Sister's Haddock is the best fish dish on Cape Ann. The atmosphere is bright and light. I have never had a service problem. There is one server (a male) who can be stand-off-ish.

And, the pop overs are excellent.

All was great when the first opened. I frequented the establishment at least twice a week. Servers never warmed up to us, regardless of the more than 20% tips.

When you lay out hundred of dollars a month to eat in a restaurant, you expect a simple hello or thank you once in awhile. Final straw was when I went their with my usual girlfriend, in a severe snowstorm. They rudely told me to wait outside. Haven't been back since and never will.

This is our new favorite restaurant. Everything I have gotten here so far is delicious. The popovers they give you before the meal are perfect, not too filling like bread tends to be. I have only had one waitress that is a bit bland, but everyone else if very friendly.

I spent some time looking online, trying to figure out a perfect place to go for dinner. Passports did not fall shy of my expectations. It is located on a main street among bustling shops. The atmosphere was cozy. The walls were painted a lively yellow. Each table was topped with a fresh-picked sunflower. The dinner's proportion was great for the price. It looked so good and fancy I almost didn't want to ruin it. Of course, however, the plate was finished before too long.

Food was fabulous! Lackluster service.

Posted by: LovingWDW at November 27, 2004 07:11 PM

best restaurant on cape ann by far, food has a wonderful blend of complex and complimentory flavors. Service is slighty slower than would be expected but not enough to make an appreciable difference in the rating.

Posted by: mike at November 5, 2004 10:48 AM

Always good food. I still just LOVE those popovers. The services is mezza mez, but as long as I get the correct food and it's good, I can live with that.

Posted by: vicks at October 23, 2004 06:52 PM

Still one of the best anywhere. Service is excellent, food is creative and fresh, nice selection on the menu. Better than any of the other comparable ones downtown by a big margin.
