got take out for the first time in months. I will put this very simple: They have the best clam chowder I have ever tasted. They also have friendly staff, specially the waitress who served us the two times we have been there. I didn't know that Sal guy, but current staff is great too.
I've been going to the Causeway for approximately three years. While it's understandable that the summer crowds and location near the sewage plant - may not be ideal for many...the staff (when not overloaded) combined with the wonderful local patrons make Causeway a enjoyable stop to get decent food and local ambience. My strategy for a less-stressed dining experience is to call in advance and take my meal to Stage Fort Park where I can enjoy the waves and boats while greedily digging into my seafood, or shrimp platter. That being said - do this during the warmer times of the year. In short, the Causeway is a great place to get local food. Ken Posted by: Ken at October 3, 2009 09:23 AMI must say, many people have reccomended this place. When my husband and I ate there we had the best food by far! We are returning this evening and bringing friends.its great to be able to byob!! I WILL be passing the word that the Causeway is an excellent resturant with LARGE portions, great service and a friendly atmosphere. Thanks for a great time and many more to come. Posted by: Chandra at July 2, 2009 05:39 PMI have been in Gloucester for 2weeks now and I have been to the causeway restaurant about 8 times for there delicous fish chowder and the amazing peter platter u can't find any fresh fish like this in arizona I will deffenitly be back to Gloucester for that place Posted by: Jeffrey at June 2, 2009 07:07 PMIt's way to much portion's the food it really watery it's way to crowded and hot and it's really not that sanitary You must be kidding me!!! SAL made and ran The Causeway and frankly I think that this place will never be the same without him, outstanding work ethic and a real host and always a genuine smile to great you, can't replace a guy like that!!!! Hats off to SAL Posted by: Paul at March 16, 2009 09:27 PMFOR THE PEOPLE THAT ARE LOOKING FOR SAL, HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A GOOD WAITER BUT THERE IS ANOTHER SIDE TO HIM VERY PUSHY AND RUSHING PEOPLE OUT OF THE RESTAURANT. THANK GOD HE IS GONE NOW ITS BEEN A PLEASURE NOT BEING RUSHED ANYMORE AND ENJOYING MY MEAL. THE WAISTAFF IS PLEASANT AND THE FOOD IS GREAT. The baked haddock was a large, flat rectangle of fish with a greasy, soggy crumb topping. It looked like it had been frozen for some time, and had a strong, nasty taste. There's no way we were served fresh fish. It looked compressed, and didn't resemble any fresh haddock I've ever seen before. After a few bites, neither of us could continue with our meals. The waitress offered to give us replacement meals, but frankly, we had lost our appetites. We paid and left. This place had been highly recommended, and I can't understand why. The atmosphere was marginal, to say the least. Not terribly clean, and not comfortable either. It was so cold inside when we were there that we had to keep our winter coats on. Go back to a dump that serves nasty food?? No thanks!! Posted by: Unhappy Diner at February 21, 2009 07:38 PM You can find Sal at the Franklin some nights, some days at Legal Seafoods in Peabody. But, yes, the Causeway is poorer without him. Posted by: Discerning EATS critic at December 21, 2008 05:11 PMYou can find Sal at the Franklin some nights, some days at Legal Seafoods in Peabody. But, yes, the Causeway is poorer without him. Posted by: Discerning EATS critic at December 21, 2008 05:11 PMWe miss Sal! The customer service is not the same without him. Where did he go? Posted by: Craig at December 20, 2008 08:40 PMWe ate there twice during our week in Rockport. we had to go back there to get the lobster pie. Easily feeds two adults for $20...of course I ate it by myself to burn the memory of it in my tastebuds and brain for next summer! Now I know who Sal is and what all the fuss was about him not being there. He was the waiter that "ran" the place and his personality was big, genuine and welcoming. You can't replace a guy like that. LOVE LOVE THE CAUSWAWAY;NEVER HAD A BAD MEAL THERE.. BUT WHAT HAPPE'ND TO SAL WE LOVE YOU; BEST WAITER ON THE NORTH SHORE Posted by: George of GLOUCESTETR at July 25, 2008 11:33 PMYou either love or hate a place like this. It is busy, hot, cramped, crowded, long lines etc..yeah yeah we know. On the other side, the food is outrageously fresh and well prepared with near monsterous portions. You can grab some beer or wine at the package store adjacent to the restaurant for your meal. This place is a true find. Not a first date place or good for quiet conversation, but if you are with your REAL friends and want great food...this is the place. We will be there this Saturday while on vacation! Yum!!! the causeway is the best place i have ever ate. and you people who don't like have issues, becauce it is awsome!!!!!!! Posted by: steve at July 22, 2008 08:19 PMThe Causeway is the best for what they do . . . Italian food like your grandmother made. If you were raised Sicilian/Italian, this is the BEST. We brought a friend from San Diego, and he couldn't get over the fish chowder. He talked about it during the entire trip, and we agree . . . it is the very best. But Sal . . . WE MISS YOU!!! Cannoli Posted by: cannoli at June 28, 2008 07:24 PMThe Casway is the best fried resterant that I have ever been to. They do a great job on everything that I have ever tried there. The burgers are huge and amazing. The muscles are the best that I have ever had. The fried calamarie is incredible. I have nothing bad to say about it! My wife and I discovered the Causeway last year on a recommendation from a local. The place is absolutely fantastic. The food is exceptional, the portion sizes just blow you away and the service has always been great. We visit the Cape Ann area every year and the Causeway will alwys be on our must eat at list. We were here on business and heard so many positive reviews, food, service. And we had the pleasure of meeting the legendary "Sal". He was proficient, friendly, professional and made our party feel like old friends. What an infectious smile! The portions were generous (enough for another meal),food was delectable, service was outstanding. We drove from NJ and my best friend from Quincy joined us for this memorable meal. Thank you Sal! Arrived yesterday evening (light snow) about 6:30pm - one parking spot open (whew!). After misidentifying Sal as "Joe," the three of us "got down to business." The fried calamari appetizer ($7.99) was absolutely fabulous; I am a big fan and these had the lightest fried batter and were the freshest I have ever tasted! No "rubber" here; no "off-tastes." Virtually, melt-in-your-mouth! The entrees: 2 fish & chips & 1 baked scallop. All were excellent - much more fish (again, a light-battered haddock) than chips (most restaurants, the other way around). Baked scallops were de-licious. Our compliments to Sal and the helpful "crew" at the Causeway for a great dining experience. Posted by: fwj at December 8, 2007 10:12 AM Posted by: George From Gloucester at November 4, 2007 07:33 PM We just ate at the Causeway last weekend and Sal was our waiter. We think Sal is great--efficient and friendly (the restaurant is fast-paced). The Causeway is what it is: big portions; good, garlicky food; decent prices; BYOB. The Causeway isn't about the atmosphere, it's about lots of good Italian food at a fair price. Posted by: Cannoli at October 23, 2007 07:45 PMWOULD NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN.THE MINUTE I SAT DOWN THEY WANTED MY ORDER. SAL YOU NEED TO RELAX. Posted by: wright at September 27, 2007 01:48 AM WE LOVE IT; SAL, GREAT SERVICE. SEE YA SOON http://www.capeannweb.com/images/5star.gif ¡Que rica la comida! Regresseremos qualquier visita a Glosta. I went here along time ago and the food was good. I went recently and the food is good. Big portions. The only difference is they got so popular they added more tables and chairs to their dinning room and it's a bit crowded. To bad they couldn't buy out the liguor store and enlarge their place! Posted by: Tammy at May 18, 2007 02:52 PM I do not know how they can serve the food they do for so little money. You can't cook at home for their price. I can not get enough of their haddock!!!! There is so little ambiance, that it is campy and has its own ambiance. The food is unsurpassed in value. I have to agree with you jane this place is turning into a local joke ya there portions are huge but the service is horrible the quality of food isnt all that great and the place is a dump. Its to bad because at one point i enjoyed the causeway and i dont thing i will ever go back Posted by: Melissa at February 14, 2007 12:54 PMMy husband and I ate dinner at the Causeway. We're not eager to return. The waiter made us feel so rushed -- hardly felt like we had time to read the menu. We both ordered haddock. We felt like our food was thrown at us. Our salads were brought to us, and before we knew it, our dinners were served --not hot, just warm. The portions were large, but the restaurant is very cramped. It almost appeared that we got our check before we finished our dinner. The waiter was more concerned about turning the table than providing service. Would not recommend to anyone. Posted by: Jane at February 4, 2007 01:00 AMThis place is the best all around dining in Gloucester. It was my favorite local place until I found a new #1 in nearby Beverly, but this is still strong at #2 on my list. I am really picky and eat out all over the place. Price is very reasonable bordering on cheap, food is fantastic, service is great and you can not beat the portions. I know several that travel long distance just for this place and they have also catered several parties I have attended and have no complaints at all. Keep up GREAT work!! Posted by: John B at December 29, 2006 04:25 PM Tina I have to think you have some kind of agenda against this place. Do yourself a favor and take a course in spelling please. Posted by: confused at November 28, 2006 08:56 PM place is Horrible have to agree Sandrea this resteraunt is appoling first of all the smell of raw sawage greats you at the door considering the right near atually next door a sawage treatment center. The place is a dump no matter what they do with it a coat of paint doesnt do anything the food is gross waitstaff is very pushy and i love the fact that you step in trash to go to your table i dont know why that place is busy mabey those people like dirty places to eat. I was discusted its gone way down down Hill Posted by: Tina at November 27, 2006 11:26 PMVisiting family in Gloucetser and they sent me to Georges for breakfast and it was tremendous. I asked their cook (owner??) for a dinner reccomendation and he sent me to the Causeway.WOW is all I can say. Portions were massive and the mussels were enough for four to start with. The clams were abundant and delicious. Two great restaurants in one city. You locals are lucky. Ginroo Posted by: Arianna at November 26, 2006 09:18 PM
A brilliant place to eat. I cannot think of why someone would have a bad dining experience here. The food and staff are above anything else anywhere. Yes, the place is small, so use your brain and plan accordingly... Posted by: Capt. Carl at September 20, 2006 08:15 PMThe Causeway has the freshest seafood any where we used to frequent The Gull but stopped going there because there portions are skimmpy and there prices are outrageous. The new owners don't have a clue about the restr. buisness , if they did there prices would be lower and there portions larger. The service at The Causeway is great , it's stinks at The Gull ,so we now frequent the Causeway with family and friends and would strongly recommend you trying it. My wife and i ate here today, as we do about twice a week. As always the food was great and the waitress was friendly. we have been eating here for 8 years and only one time the fish was a little chewy, but the problem was resolved and the item was taken of our bill. Keep up the great work. A personal thanks to Peter & Enza. See you next week.... What a meal. My wife and live over 1400 miles away but we really enjoy the seafood served at the Causeway. Their fish chowder is second to none. Jim Posted by: Jim at February 15, 2006 05:59 PMhttp://www.capeannweb.com/images/3star.gif Causeway is always consitent. Nothing fancy, just good food and lots of it. Hard to understand "randy" but maybe he couldn't read the sign and was in a different restaurant. The kitchen is in plain view. I observed few health code violations, considering how busy they are. I go back often. Posted by: bill at January 29, 2006 04:21 PM Where to start We will drive 3 hours for dinner at this place! As all have said, you are never disappointed, servings are huge and delicious. We have recommended this to everyone we know and they agree! Not so much a secret anymore, the Causeway is truly an amazing place. It don't look like much, but you will find tourists, locals, poor and rich all come to this place for the best fried seafood in a 50 mile radius. Long lines are a bit of a downturn. They have the best fried seafood around. Huge portions, and competative if not below normal prices. Only downfall is that they are so small. If you hit a busy time of day you may be waiting in line for a while. Cambece Posted by: James Cambece at November 14, 2005 11:47 AM Food and friendliness, definitely 5 stars!! Larry & Emma Lew visited The Causeway on October 4, 2005 and REALLY enjoyed it! Emma had the halibut which was outstanding and Larry, the steamed mussels (great) and the baked scallops/shrimp/fish combo (great)!! Peter the owner and our waitress, Annette were swell and, "Annette, thanks again for the clam chowder!!" Legal Seafood's chowder in Burlington, Mass came in in a close 2nd to yours!! The Causeway's was loaded with clams and just the right amount of potatoes!! Definitely the best food on our trip!!! Your cooks did a great job!!!!! Posted by: Larry & Emma Viegas at October 14, 2005 07:02 PMi have always loved this resturant i have come here for years, at least 2-3 times a month but the last time i came here on september 25th i was very discouraged the mussels were not cooked and our waitress said oh sometimes they dont like to open and took them away~!! there were more than 1/2 of them left and then i order fried clams and got like 12 fried clams and 10 french fries this is not like them hopefully we caught you on a bad night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted by: jeff at September 26, 2005 10:22 AM As a born and bred New Englander, I feel strongly about my seafood. This is, by far, one of the best seafood restaurants I have ever eaten at. The portions are huge. The batter on the fried selections is as light as a feather. Great idea for the liquor store next door. Posted by: Kristen at August 24, 2005 02:13 PM Just reading the reviews as a friend told me that it was great. I can not yet comment but I have never heard anyone ever complain that they got too much food when it was good/great. Certaily, if it were poor quality and try to make it up with quantity, that I understand can be gross. But, the other way around, I do not get it. Posted by: Bob at August 20, 2005 11:58 AM My wife and I have been to this restaurant several times in the last few years, and we are never dissapointed with the service, portions,or quality of food. The prices are great, and thefamily that own this jewel of a restaurant are always delightful..try pete's platter its a great seafood combo platter, also the cheesesteak sandwich is unbelieveably large..i dare you to try and pick up and eat.We would never visit gloucester, mass. without stopping in for a bite,,,YUM.. This place is a jewel, great chowder but the fried oysters and shrimp are simply the best. Go early or late, but go. Great prices. The best baked haddock in New England. Potions are huge. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM Posted by: Denise at May 3, 2005 03:00 PM the best italian food in gloucester, my wife and i love it huge portions, fresh seafood, and worth the wait. if you dont feel like waiting you can call in and take it home, i have not gotten a bad meal here yet. Great Fish Chowder, and lots of it. One of the few places that knows how to make chowder the right way-THIN! Most food very good. Strictly a place to EAT! Quality, Quantity and Reasonable Prices. The best and freshest seafood around hands down! The portions on the Captain's Platter are tremendous! Don't miss this hidden jewel. Posted by: Cyndi at July 25, 2004 07:41 PM I was in Gloucester on business and happened to drop in to get a fast bite not knowing what kind of restaurant I was about to experience. I am from Myrtle Beach and have eaten a lot of seafood. This is the best I have ever had. Unbelievable portions for the cost. My favorite place to eat. Gigantic portions, friendly staff, I'm eating there again tonight! Posted by: Kate at February 11, 2004 05:18 PM A little secret in Gloucester! This is probably the best restaurant in Gloucester. Delicious food, huge portions, great value. Their specials are divine! Every time we drive by, anytime of year, anytime of day, the place is packed. It's not just a stoming ground for the natives.
