American musical-theatre composer Richard Rodgers collaborated with two great—and greatly different—lyricists. Rodgers paired fresh, charming melodies with Lorenz Hart’s wry love songs and triple rhymes; for Oscar Hammerstein’s character-specific lyrics, his tunes grew simpler yet grander. We explore these two brilliant collaborations side by side, by pairing songs both well-known and obscure on similar topics by each team.
